In April a conditional clearance by the National Board of Wildlife’s NBWL to a coal mining project by Coal India Limited CIL in the Saleki Proposed Reserve Forest PRF of the Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve had sparked protests in the state.
The Gauhati High Court on Tuesday said it will wait for the outcome of the enquiry by Assam government before proceeding in the case related to Coal India& 39;s mining inside Dehing Patkai the largest rainforest of Northeast.
The coal mining activities carried out at the Patkai Hill mines by Coal India Limited CIL after 2003 was basically legal. This was stated by former Margherita MLA Pradyut Bordoloi who was also the forest and power minister in separate terms in the erstwhile Congress government led by chief minister Tarun Gogoi.
Khataniar claimed mining continued till 2012 with approval in gross violation of the Forest Conservation Act 1980 and Wildlife Protection Act 1972. “Mining was carried out in 73 hectares out of the 98.59 hectares in Tikak open-cast mine which falls under the reserve forest without any approval” he said.
